Troy
MacGillivray had his first teaching gig in St. Ann’s, Cape
Breton at the Gaelic College of Fine Although he has training in many disciplines, his first love is the Celtic piano and he clearly displays his extensive knowledge of it history in both his concerts and classrooms. Troy has done many workshops and master classes since 1993 in both the fiddle and piano traditions. He has taught at such festivals as the Ceolas Festival, a prestigious festival in the Western Hebrides of Scotland; The Ceilidh Trail School of Celtic Music, Cape Breton; Summerfolk in New Bedford, Massachusetts; Workshops with the Coast String Fiddle Group in Nanaimo, BC; The Emma Lake Fiddle Camp in Saskatchewan; the Nunavut Fiddlers in Iqaluit; the Rocky Mountain Fiddle Camp in Denver, CO; the Goderich Celtic Festival; and the Edinburgh Fiddle Festival in Scotland. Besides these notable festivals and workshops, Troy taught his own classes in Antigonish, NS while attending high school and university in both fiddle and piano accompaniment for students of all levels. Troy likes to balance ear training with reading music. It is important within the Gaelic tradition to have a good ear to pick up the intricacies of the music. MacGillivray teaches tunes that range in type and are suitable for all levels of students including slow airs, marches, strathspeys, reels, and jigs with both music and by ear. When teaching piano, Troy usually picks a tune and creates a chart for the beginner and intermediate students to match a certain tune and instructs simple chords and patterns for the students to follow. Troy’s method for piano is very valuable, as he is able to play the tunes in the class on the fiddle, as it would be done in a professional setting, in order for the student to gain full knowledge of the tune, and be able to match the piano to the melody. ..................................................................................................................................................
